"Always do right. This will surprise some people and astonish the rest." Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain)

Family History

My family have been restoring wood since the early 1900's and decoratively finishing since the 1700's all from the East end of London, where I was born.

My great Grandfather and Grandfather, who inspired and helped to teach me were both French Polishers the tradition only skipping my mothers generation.

My History

I have been wood finishing for over twenty five years since the age of fifteen where my first job was working through the night with my Grandfather stripping and reliming the oak waiter stands in the then named Palm Court Restaurant (now called The Terrace Grill & Bar) of Le Méridien Piccadilly Hotel.

I still remember the excitement of working at night and getting paid a whole fifty pounds, which was generous for a fifteen year old in 1986. I carried on studying and went to University where I read materials engineering and afterwards gained experience in a number of different jobs before returning to wood finishing.

After working for most of London's largest and best respected wood finishing companies I branched out on my own around 1996, soon after I specialised in flooring, although I still regularly undertake antique and architectural work. I have worked on many of London's most distinctive and famous listed buildings and in some of the top offices and homes in London, the home counties and around the country, I am as happy working in a small ex council flat as I am in a multi million pound palace or stately home, the quality of work I produce or price I charge, like my pride, doesn't change according to my surroundings.

I am a graduate of The London School of Furniture with City and Guilds certificates in both Wood Finishing and Antique Restoration.

I am interested in wood, the trees whence it came, where they were grown and all good furniture and architectural design especially period architecture and both traditional and modern materials and techniques. Combining both historical and new novel materials and techniques allows for finishes that look traditional but with greater durability and reduced maintenance optimising both function and form. I believe repairs and finishes should be both beautiful and long lasting.
